4 Things You Can Do When Your Feeling in the Dumps


It’s no secret that the current state of the world and the coronavirus has gotten many of us feeling down, or in a funk. For me, I’ve found myself spending a LOT more of my time online and in the house. If I’m not hearing current updates about the news from family members, or negative information popping across my phone from AppleNews, I’m getting all kinds of updates on social media. (Don’t get me wrong, not everything I encounter from these different sources is negative. However, a lot of it is.) I don’t know about you guys, but for me, there is a direct relation between what I am taking in, and my mood/outlook for the day. When we’re bombarded with lots of negative information it’s a hard-core fact that it takes an effect on our mindset. We aren’t made to take in sooo much negative energy, let it sit inside of our brain space, and carry on in life as if we had never taken it in. It has to come out somehow. A lot of times that can be in ways that we don’t even realize. 


I’ve notice that when I start my day off reading news on my phone or heading right over to social media, I already am having a negative attitude toward starting my day. I spend more time getting up before getting dressed and getting ready. Since I started my day off a little later, I end up postponing breakfast until I don’t even end up having it. The next thing you know, it’s 3pm and I haven’t even had a real meal yet because I’ve already started snacking on chips and am now fighting monster-sized cravings. 🤣 (true story) Before I know it, I’ve snacked on everything that I didn’t plan on having and am rushing to meet a deadline because I didn’t have time this morning to get it out of the way. Now I’m sort of stressed out and not as productive as I could have been. Can you see how starting my day by taking in a little bit of negative news kick-started my day without me even directly realizing it? That’s how easily we can be affected.


I’m sure we’ve all had a day similar to this, but have no fear. Here are 5 things you can do to make sure this doesn’t happen more often!


  1. Start your day off with meditation or prayer. When you wake up, take 5 minutes to silence your mind and be grateful for waking up to see a brand new day. You can start off with a positive prayer or a short meditation video found on YouTube. Every day you wake up is a chance to start over and do something you’ve never done before. Make it a positive one.
  2. Wait before opening any Social Media Apps. When you first wake up, make an extra effort to not use any social media sites for at least the first 2 hours of your day. (Try going without for the entire day if you’re really up for it!) You’d be surprised. You’ll have a bit more mental clarity. Not having so many different posts and thoughts entering your mind per second will give you more time to think, just breathe, and notice the positive things that are happening around you, before starting the day.
  3. Write down two positive things that you want to do that day. Those two things could literally be anything. Today for me, I wanted to go for a walk, and complete one application for graduate school. Having daily goals (big or small) make you feel a sense of purpose about your day. Each time you check one of your small daily goals off of your mental checklist, you feel more accomplished and purposeful about your day.
  4. Go for a walk or rent a bike! Most cities have bicycles available for rent around the city parks. Here in Houston, there are bycicles around most of the big parks available for renting. Grab your keys, water bottle, and visor, and head out for a bike ride or short walk. Take in some fresh air and just live in the moment.
